In the summer, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, road biking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, fishing, kayaking, rafting and golfing, to name just a few. In the winter, Durango has easy access to five major ski resort areas, including Purgatory, located 30 minutes north of downtown. You can ride the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad as it winds through 46 miles of the San Juan National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton. Or, visit Mesa Verde National Park (35 miles away) known for its cliff dwellings. Durango hosts a myriad of special events including Art festivals and exhibits of local, regional, and national artists.
